Sühring

German in Yen Akat

German $$$$ Yen Akat ★ 4.6

Twin chefs Thomas and Mathias Sühring opened their eponymous restaurant in March 2016, bringing modern German fine dining to Bangkok's residential Yen Akat neighborhood. Raised in East Berlin, the brothers trained separately at three-Michelin-starred kitchens across Europe. Mathias worked under Jonnie Boer at De Librije in the Netherlands, while Thomas trained with Sven Elverfeld at Aqua and Heinz Beck at La Pergola in Rome. They reunited in Bangkok after seven years at Mezzaluna in Lebua State Tower, and Sühring became a deeply personal project rooted in their shared German heritage.

The restaurant holds three Michelin stars as of the 2026 guide, making it only the second establishment in Thailand to reach that level. It ranked No. 22 on The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2025 list and No. 11 on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants the same year. The brothers also received The Best Chef 2025 award. Their approach draws on childhood memories of summers spent on their grandparents' farm, and a cherished family recipe book from their grandmother sits on the dining tables as a symbol of that lineage.

What to Expect

You dine inside a restored 1970s villa with four distinct spaces: a main dining room, an open kitchen area, a glass house overlooking the garden, and a private living room seating up to eight. Natural wood, glass walls, and soft lighting set the tone. The format is the "Erlebnis" tasting menu, typically around 12 courses, with optional wine pairings drawn from a list of roughly 40 selections by the glass. German and Austrian bottles feature prominently, including Rheingau and Kremstal wines. A non-alcoholic juice pairing is also available. Service is warm and unhurried, with a team of 50 to 60 staff working each session.

Highlights

Sühring's menu changes with the seasons, but several dishes have become signatures. The Spätzle, soft egg noodles paired with Périgord truffle, is pure comfort on a plate. Labskaus reinvents the Northern German corned beef classic with caviar. A savory hazelnut waffle with vinegar nods to the brothers' first taste of West Berlin street food during German reunification. Among recent courses, scallop with pumpkin and kelp balances sweetness and brine, while Kagoshima A5 wagyu with kintoki carrot and oxtail showcases the kitchen's precision with luxury ingredients. Black Forest cake closes the meal in a form that would make their grandmother proud.

Location & Access

Sühring sits on Soi Yen Akat 3, a quiet residential lane in the Chong Nonsi area. The nearest transit option is BTS Chong Nonsi station, roughly a 10-minute walk or short taxi ride.
