Tanbo Chicken Rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice in Yaowarat (Chinatown)

Hainanese Chicken Rice Yaowarat (Chinatown) ★ 4.8

Tanbo Chicken Rice is a shophouse khao man gai counter on Yaowarat Road, sitting directly next door to Hua Seng Hong in the thick of Bangkok's Chinatown. The draw is the rice. It comes out with a light yellow tint and a heavier aroma than most versions in the city, cooked in chicken broth rendered with chicken fat so the grains pick up real flavor before the meat ever lands on the plate.

The menu is narrow on purpose. You pick poached chicken or fried chicken, both Hainanese-Singaporean style, both served over the same fragrant rice with a bowl of clear broth and a chili-ginger dipping sauce on the side. Plates start around 60 baht, which is why you will see office workers, market traders, and late-night Yaowarat crowds all queuing at the same counter.

What to Expect

You order at the front, where the cooks are carving birds over a wooden block, and you grab a seat at one of the small tables squeezed along the shopfront. Service is fast and functional. Plates land within minutes of ordering, you eat, you pay at the counter, you move on. At peak hours, roughly 12pm to 1pm and again from 7pm onward, there is usually a short queue along the pavement, but turnover is quick and the wait rarely stretches past ten or fifteen minutes.

The room is bright, tiled, and built for volume rather than atmosphere. Expect the usual Yaowarat soundtrack of scooters, street vendors, and Chinese pop on a small speaker. Come hungry and come with cash.

Highlights

Khao Man Gai, the boiled version, is the house default: poached Hainanese chicken sliced thin over the yellow chicken-fat rice, with a clear broth on the side and a sharp chili-ginger-garlic sauce that does most of the talking. For something heavier, Khao Man Gai Tod swaps in crisp fried chicken over the same rice, the skin shattering into the grains as you cut through it. Both plates are small by Bangkok standards, which is why regulars tend to order one of each and split.

Location & Access

Tanbo Chicken Rice sits at 301 Yaowarat Road in Samphanthawong, the spine of Bangkok's Chinatown, right next to Hua Seng Hong. The nearest station is MRT Wat Mangkon, about a five-minute walk east along Yaowarat Road. It is a useful stop if you are working through the Chinese restaurant in Yaowarat, Bangkok circuit and want a quick, cheap plate between heavier meals.
