Teppen Sathorn

Japanese Entertainment Dining in Sathorn

Japanese Entertainment Dining $$$ Sathorn ★ 4.8

Teppen Sathorn is the flagship Bangkok venue of chef-owner Shunya Oshima's Teppen group, an Entertainment Japanese Dining izakaya built around a warayaki straw-grill counter, a sushi bar and a nightly 9pm show of fire, music and sake shots poured straight down the line. It sits on Soi Sathon 8, a short walk from the Chong Nonsi BTS interchange, and runs late: kitchen hours stretch to midnight six nights a week.

Oshima's concept splits the difference between a working Japanese restaurant in Sathorn, Bangkok and a dinner-and-show room. Seafood is flown in from Japan, the grill cooks over burning rice straw for that smoky warayaki char, and the sushi counter turns out nigiri using premium cuts. The Sathorn original predates the group's Ekkamai branch (relaunched as Teppen Refined in July 2025), and it still pulls the bigger weekend crowds, helped by a 4.8 rating across nearly 4,000 Google reviews.

What to Expect

You walk into a dining room tiled in shimmering mosaic, with exposed ceilings, patterned paper light shades and a grill counter placed where the office crowd can see it. Seating runs from counter stools facing the warayaki flames to booths and group tables pitched at Sathorn's after-work bankers and agency teams. Service is warm and fast, with staff calling out orders in Japanese across the pass.

Around 9pm the room dims, the music cuts in and the grill cooks run the nightly show: straw fires flare at the counter, sake shots travel down the bar and skewers come off the charcoal in quick succession. Pricing lands in the mid-range for Japanese in Sathorn given the seafood sourcing, which is how Teppen Sathorn keeps the room full on weeknights as well as weekends.

Highlights

The kitchen's signature is warayaki, theatrical straw-fire grilling performed in front of you at the counter, where the rice-straw flames sear fish and meat in seconds and leave a clean, smoky finish. Weekends bring out the anago sushi, a Michelin-leaning sea eel nigiri the group treats as its showpiece plate. Kushiyaki skewers come off the open charcoal grill in tight rotations, juicy and simply seasoned so the protein does the work. For a fuller run through the counter, the sushi omakase selection moves through premium Japanese seafood as nigiri, paired easily with the deep sake list.
