Vertigo

Grill Seafood in Sathorn

Grill Seafood $$$$ Sathorn ★ 4.3

Vertigo occupies a converted helipad on the 61st floor of the Banyan Tree Bangkok, 220 metres above street level. Since opening in 2002, this open-air grill has paired premium steaks and seafood with unobstructed 360-degree views of the Bangkok skyline. There are no walls and no ceiling above the dining area. The effect after dark, with the city grid lit up in every direction, has kept the restaurant on global top-ten rooftop dining lists for over two decades.

The menu leans on charcoal-grilled proteins: Australian Wagyu tenderloin, Alaskan king crab, and tiger prawns sourced from southern Thai waters. A la carte options sit alongside four- and five-course set menus (starting around THB 3,100 without wine pairing). Recent additions include pan-seared foie gras with brandy-caramelized apples and jasmine tea-smoked lamb loin. Vertigo is not a tasting-menu concept or a molecular kitchen. It is a grill-and-seafood restaurant in Sathorn, Bangkok, that happens to operate at altitude.

Moon Bar, the adjacent cocktail lounge on the same rooftop, opens two hours before dinner service and stays open until 1 AM. Most guests start with drinks at Moon Bar before moving to their table at Vertigo. The Vertigo Sunset, the bar's signature cocktail, has become a minor Bangkok institution in its own right.

What to Expect

You take a dedicated elevator from the hotel lobby to the 60th floor, then climb a short flight of stairs to the open rooftop. The first thing you register is wind. There is nothing between you and the skyline except a low railing and the city stretching to the horizon. Tables are spaced generously across the open deck, and the dress code is smart casual: long pants and closed shoes for men, no flip-flops or sportswear.

Service runs at hotel-restaurant pace. Waiters walk you through the revamped menu and make pairing suggestions. A four-course dinner with wine runs about THB 4,500 per person. Expect to spend two to three hours from the first cocktail at Moon Bar through dessert. The crowd skews toward couples, hotel guests, and tourists checking off a bucket-list view, though you will spot Bangkok locals celebrating occasions too.

Highlights

The Australian Wagyu Tenderloin is the anchor of the grill section, cooked over charcoal and served with a choice of sauces. Portions are sized for the price point. The Grilled Tiger Prawns arrive shell-on with a simple char that lets the sweetness of the prawn come through. Alaskan King Crab, served chilled or grilled depending on the preparation, is the most expensive single item on the menu and the one most tables seem to order. Beyond the grill, the pan-seared foie gras with brandy-caramelized apples and cherry reduction adds a French accent, while the jasmine tea-smoked lamb loin with garlic mash brings a more Southeast Asian note to the set menu rotation.

Location & Access
