Three of the twelve cocktail bars listed here are speakeasies with a door you have to find. Vol de Nuit hides at the back of an art space in Sathorn, a project by the French artist Arnaud Nazare-Aga. YOU KNOW WHERE, steps from BTS Saladaeng, fits three doors on its Silom frontage and only one of them opens. Weekend Thonglor is tucked on Soi 23 behind a fireplace and a mosaic floor spelling its own name.
Iron Balls in Ekkamai goes the other way and shows you everything: it is a working gin distillery with a copper still on site and tours of it you can arrange in advance. Elsewhere the pull is the concept. Abandoned Mansion runs a Prohibition theme in a six-metre-ceilinged room beneath a Sukhumvit 14 hotel, Rhodes Bangkok imports Mykonos to Thonglor, and aiya bkk pours Hong Kong-inspired drinks in Ari.
Ten of the twelve serve past midnight, and Rhodes runs latest of all, to half past three on Fridays and Saturdays. The two that close at midnight are Younger Bar in Ekkamai, which trades as a cafe during the day, and The White Mulberry Bar. Weekend Thonglor opens Thursday to Sunday only, SSDD closes on Sundays, and Vol de Nuit closes on Mondays.
