Japanese cooking in Bangkok is a set of specialisms rather than a single cuisine, and the eight restaurants here cover most of them without overlapping. Renga in Ari does Kansai-style sukiyaki, searing the beef with sugar and fat before the broth goes in, using A5 Kagoshima wagyu and kurobuta pork. Niku Niku in Ekkamai grills certified A5 over charcoal in an Osaka-style yakiniku room. Sushi Seki runs an omakase counter of about twenty seats on the fourth floor of EmQuartier.
Three izakaya sit in the middle. Teppen Ekkamai has been open since June 2013 and works a food entertainment concept with straw-grilled warayaki dishes; its Sathorn sibling puts on a nightly nine o'clock show with fire and sake at the grill counter. Yurijin, next to BTS Ekkamai, runs a shokudo-style lunch with a main plus more than twenty unlimited side dishes. Jua in Thonglor grills wagyu skewers and maitake.
Ekkamai holds three of the eight, more than any other area. Nothing here trades past midnight, and nothing closes a full day either. The outlier on hours is Ryoku Cafe in Phrom Phong, which opens at eight in the morning for souffle pancakes and matcha and is done by eight at night.
