European restaurants in Bangkok

European cooking in Bangkok concentrates in a few towers and a few sois, and the ten restaurants here show that shape clearly. Four are French: Mezzaluna and Chef's Table both run contemporary tasting menus, Signature works from Thierry Drapeau's Vendee kitchen, and Scarlett is a Parisian brasserie with a terrace on the 37th floor of the Pullman Hotel G. Three are Italian. Appia opened on Sukhumvit Soi 31 in 2013 under a Rome-born chef from a family of butchers, La Dotta makes tagliatelle al ragu and tortellini in brodo, and Venezia covers pasta, pizza and seafood soup.

Two outliers carry the rest. Sühring holds three Michelin stars for German cooking, spaetzle with Perigord truffle and labskaus among them, and is one of only two restaurants in Thailand at that level. Sirocco runs Mediterranean food at the top of State Tower, and Water Library in Pathumwan is led by an Austrian chef who came from a Michelin-starred kitchen in Germany.

Four of the ten close a day or more each week, so the week matters. Signature shuts Mondays, Chef's Table shuts Mondays, Mezzaluna shuts Sundays, and Sühring shuts Mondays and Tuesdays. Scarlett stops serving at five in the afternoon.
